The E.N.D. (Ending Nicotine Dependency) Program is an 8-module tobacco reduction and cessation program developed by the Utah Department of Health, and is specifically designed to help adolescents quit using tobacco. The program, implemented at no cost, not only builds skills and knowledge regarding tobacco use, but it also focuses on developing a wide variety of social skills including:
- Effective Communication
- Stress Management
- Decision Making
- Goal Setting
- Nutrition and Physical Activity
A wide variety of teaching techniques are used to facilitate this program including videos, interactive demonstrations and "hands-on" skill building activities.
Who Can Participate?
Adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 are eligible to take part in the program. E.N.D is effective for youth who want to quit and for youth who don't want to or who might not be ready to quit.
Data collected by the Department of Health in Utah in 1997, shows that youth who are not considering quitting at the beginning of the program, show measurable changes and many attempt to reduce or quit their tobacco use by the end of the program. During the program, youth learn tobacco quitting skills that they can draw upon in the future, as well as a wide variety of social skills that will be helpful to them, regardless of their tobacco use status.
